What drives the human soul? Where does passion come from? How will we know that we have lived a life with no regrets? Today’s events may leave us rudderless, with inadequate answers to what we seek. Dallas Willard summarized this when he stated, “Individuals suffer from a poor image, are caught up in self-rejection, and have no defenses against group pressures.” We lack reasoning skills and the emotional drive to do the work, to stand on our own. Instead, we succumb to following the mainstream and lack courage for fear of being that “lone nut.” We have lost the discipline of logic and thought and spend our timing trying to “outdo” our neighbor.
There is value in not doing. How often are we conscious of breathing? It is through the breath that we connect with our life; yet our minds constantly pull us away from the present moment. How would it be if we could stay present without judgment? Benjamin Franklin framed this when he said, “One today is worth two tomorrows; what I am to be, I am now becoming.”
It is time for rejuvenation of the mind and the heart, for they always go together. Decisions can’t be made in isolation from emotion, from satisfying the heart as well as the mind. When our thoughts and feelings are leading us in a direction that is not spiritually grounded, in a direction that God does not want us to go, we are headed for destruction. This is the crux of why we need spiritual transformation. We must bring our wants into alignment with God’s desires for us, recognizing that is the path to peace and joy. Through spiritual transformation, we can learn to do what we want, and do it in God’s way. We are called to a better life, to pull ourselves together. It is time to renovate our hearts and minds.
